Is the app Alive by Whitney Simmons right for you?
If you’re a beginner like me, you know this scenario well.
Picture this: you know in your bones that working on yourself at the gym is the next step you want to take on your journey to self-love so you sign up at your local gym. “This will be fun!” you tell yourself, as you click ‘add to cart’ while you shop for the cutest workout sets known to man. I’m looking at you Fabletics.
You can already see yourself 20 pounds lighters, walking into a room with the confidence you’ve been craving. You don’t have to hide anymore! Or cope with all of your uncomfortable feelings in the same way you have been for the past two years. This is your moment!
Fast forward to that first day you said you would start- you walk though the doors, scan your gym pass at the front desk and… AND… uh… what do I do now? You walk around looking at the equipment and end up using the simple machines you are certain you know how to use but that limits you to about 3 of them.
You suddenly feel like a camera crew is following you around and swear the person next to you can read your frantic mind. Can they tell I have no idea what I’m doing? Can this room sense my fear?
Sound familiar? Trust me when I say this was my life for years. Even when I did research at home and thought I was prepared, I would suddenly realize that I have no idea what I’m doing. Am I using the correct form? Which muscle group am I really targeting? Is all of this hard work going to be worth anything in the end?
What these questions always left me with was an empty feeling that fueled my excuses. I would stop going the moment my fear turned to shame, my lofty dreams about my future self fizzled out in front of me. This was a toxic cycle.
Until I started using Whitney Simmons’s new workout App: Alive. In this blog post I will tell you all of my undiluted thoughts on this app, the good and the bad.

The Program I Used: Lift Beginner
I was drawn to the program “Lift With Libby” where I was introduced to the beginner friendly ideals of what lifting can look like in a workout routine consisting of four lift driven workouts per week. This was the perfect program to start out with because it really eases you into the basics and builds up as you progress through the program.
The BENEFITS of using this app.
Structure
If there is one thing (of many) I need support in when it comes to my fitness goals, it’s this need for structure. If you have goals you want to reach you cannot be laissez faire- you need rules to follow even when you don’t feel like it. This concept has been difficult for me to learn, and if I’m being honest, it’s one I will keep learning over and over again.
What Alive by Whitney Simmons helped me with is it gave me a solid structure to go off of instead of free-balling my way through the gym, only to lose myself to my flimsy whims. Here’s how she does it:
After signing up I was shown a seven day breakdown of where my workouts could fit in the week. The beauty of the setup is that it lets you decide what you want your next seven days to look like. In the past I struggled staying consistent when I would try to set certain days as my “workout days” only to want to give up entirely when I fell short due to unplanned conflicts (i.e. life) getting in the way. With this type of planning I am able to move the days around so that they fit my everyday lifestyle and don’t have to be the same every week.
My workouts were split into four separate days:
- Glutes & Hamstrings
- Shoulder, Chest, Tri’s
- Quads & Calves
- Back & Biceps
I had always heard about doing certain “splits” when it came to structuring your weekly workouts but this finally put it all into perspective for me and really helped me hone in on what I needed to focus on and when.
GIFs
Another beautiful thing this app offers is the ability to see someone do the exercise you are trying to do. For many, there will be an exercise you are doing for the first time ever and as we know, using the correct form is very important. According to the National Library of Medicine, a large majority of people are not performing home-exercises correctly two weeks after their initial instruction. Although there are going to be many factors involved that lead to this being this case, I personally think it would help so many people if they had access to quickly see how it’s done.
With Alive by Whitney Simmons, you are able to see a working GIF for each exercise in your plan that gives you a 360 degree view of how someone else is doing it. There were many times it helped save my form buy having the ability to literally see it done over and over again and not having to rewind some random YouTube video I found.
Simplicity
To me, working out was always something I would over-complicate in my head. When I did this, it would stop me from committing myself when in reality there are so many ways to incorporate simplicity into your health and fitness plans. What I appreciate about Alive by Whitney Simmons is that she plans your weekly schedule in a way that is cut and dry, easy to follow, doesn’t take up too much time out of your busy day, and helps someone who wants to gain knowledge and experience in fitness do so without complicating the details.
I like using this app because I can go to the gym and get done what needs to be done without my head getting caught up in that perfection trap that makes you feel like I have to master too many things I can’t handle. It’s straightforward, simple, and lets you reach accomplishable goals which in return only fuels your confidence.
Comfort Zone and Confidence Builder
The gym is not a place I would usually consider comfortable. It can smell weird, be full of strangers I don’t want watching me openly sweat so much, and on top of it all it is filled with so many foreign looking machines and weights that intimidated me to no end. What Alive by Whitney Simmons does is it takes you to the place you once considered the arch nemesis to you comfort zone and gives you actual tools to somehow turn it into an oasis.
I went from avoiding my trip to the G-Y-M at all costs to actively carving out space in my schedule (even on vacation) to ensure I was able to make it a priority. This is all due the brilliant way the app can really transform your mindset and equip you with the courage you didn’t know you had before.
Things I Would Change
Of course, nobody is perfect and I’m not going to sit here and pretend this app or it’s creator is any different. Here are a few things I think could be better about Alive by Whitney Simmons:
Tips & Tricks
There are definite times where I wished that Whitney had included more “tips and tricks” along with each exercise. There were moments when even having the GIF to watch over and over again, I wish she had a section for “things to consider” to make extra sure I was using the correct form. For so many people the mere idea that you could be doing the exercise wrong could stop them from trying at all. That being said, I do appreciate that she has alternative options in case you don’t want to do the originally planned move.
Alternative Exercise Flexibility
When I asked friends of mine who use the app religiously what they would change, one of them told me she wished it was easier to sub in and out the alternative exercises offered in place for each workout. I agree that it is already a bit of a challenge to go out of your way to do a different move than the original, and if you could easily swap the two that would be chef’s kiss. With that being said, it’s amazing there are alternative exercises offered in the first place because we have all run into the various reasons one would need this feature, (i.e. lack of equipment) so thanks Whitney!
Personal Touch
Alive by Whitney Simmons by itself definitely has a a feminine and clean design going for it (which I think it perfect) but if there is one thing I love about Whitney, it’s her personality. I’ve followed her on TikTok for years at this point and it wasn’t her hot body or beautiful makeup that did it for me… it was the hilarious and down to Earth persona she has always so easily been able to portray in her videos. This is not me calling this personality an “act” by any means, all I’m saying is that I wish some of that could transfer over into her app and I think she could accomplish tis by adding more personal videos.
Of course, this is easier said by me, a random blogger who knows nothing about launching a fitness app, than actually done. I can see how she would maybe choose to lean more into the part of her internet persona that is there to inspire, lift up, and encourage rather than involve too much humor that may be better suited for impromptu workout video dialogue. The name of the app is Alive after all.
Would I Recommend Alive by Whitney Simmons?
Being completely honest here… YES, I totally would recommend it. I still to this day pay for my membership. Will I always need it to lean on? Time will tell, and even if you want to use this app as trainig wheels until you get more confidence to navigate the gym, I still think it’s an amazing resource.
That being said, this is an app that can be used at all levels. Yes, this is not just an app for beginning gym rats! Alive by Whitney Simmons offers programs that come in different phases so that you can keep challenging yourself and keep improving toward your goals. She even has a program for if you are pregnant! No matter who you are, there is a program on this app that can meet you where you are at.
So, if youโre on the fence about trying out Whitney Simmonsโs Alive app, I say go for it! This app has been a game-changer for me, seriously boosting my confidence in the gym and making every workout feel like a win. Whether youโre just starting out or youโve been hitting the gym for years, Alive has workouts and tips that cater to all levels, which is super refreshing. Personally, itโs given me the motivation I needed and made me feel so much more self-assured about my fitness journey. Iโm definitely planning to stick with it for the long haul, and Iโm excited to see where it takes me! Happy exercising!
